M-SParc takes home Project of the Year

M-SParc, Wales’ first dedicated Science Park, which opened on the 1st of March 2018 has been named Welsh Construction Project of the Year.

The project won two awards at the prestigious Constructing Excellence Wales awards and will be going on to represent Wales in the national awards later this year, including Project of the Year and Digital Construction.

Delivering an award winning project like this was a team effort between partners that included Willmott Dixon Construction, FaulknerBrowns Architects, and their newest tenants, Futurium Ltd, who assisted on the Digital Construction Award.

Managing Director Pryderi ap Rhisiart, who took over from Ieuan Wyn Jones in May, said “We want to attract the brightest minds in the region, and retain the talent here in North West Wales. To do this, we wanted a building that was of the highest standard, and that could be described as iconic. Along the way, we used the latest digital technology to enable us to design the building safely, and we working with Futurium a leading 3D interactive visualisation technology company based in North Wales. Futurium developed a bespoke solution from their innovative system that provided an intelligent and 3D interactive visualisation of the building before it was even built.

Project of the Year in particular is an award which celebrates architecture, construction, innovation, teamwork, economic impact, and development. We are very proud to have won both these awards, and look forward to going on to the finals in November, where we will be competing nationally with the very best iconic buildings and construction projects.”

Wilmott Dixon, who delivered the project with Bangor University on time and budget and to an exceptional standard added, “We are so proud to have won at the Constructing Excellence Wales award, the hard work and innovative technology we developed along the way, as well as the upskilling of the local supply chain and contribution to local success, was recognised at these awards. We’re also proud to be leading the industry in digital innovation”

The £20m facility, part funded by European Regional Development Funding through the Welsh Government recently announced that it had completed on time and on budget and was over 40% occupancy, beating its original opening target by some margin.
