Bangor Uni’s Science Park continues to deliver opportunity

It’s an exciting time for BU students and M-SParc tenants, with collaborations creating employment opportunities, and the possibility of new enterprises!

On Wednesday, the School of Computer Science and Electronic Engineering held their first virtual expo, and M-SParc’s tenants were encouraged to come along to see the students’ end-of-year projects in a virtual room! There was opportunity for students to find out what kind of companies work at M-SParc, and for M-SParc tenants who are hiring to identify potential employees, a successful opportunity for all involved.

Also, on Wednesday, the second of three Design Thinking workshop was held with Product Design lecturers and students, and people from industry. The intention is to develop new commercial ideas from opportunities industry partners have identified, and the students are able to contribute by challenging the ideas and coming up with alternative solutions. Ranging from farm robots, to IoT sensors, to manhole cover safety, in industries including agri tech and social services, the students had a lot of food for thought. They will be able to take these skills with them to their future workplace. In turn, the industry partners developed ideas which can be commercialised, and will work with BU and M-SParc to create business opportunities around these!

Speaking of business ideas; Bangor University students will have a chance to pitch at the Enterprise Hub @ M-SParc’s ‘Pitch Perfect’ event next week, with two pots of £100 available thanks to Santander Universities. Not only will the students get a chance to fund their ideas, but they’ll also gain invaluable experience in pitching their business idea, and receive feedback from an expert panel of judges.

Finally, the M-SParc sponsored ‘captains’ – a group made up of four M-SParc tenants and past interns – continue to work on the Enterprise by Design project, helping students look at innovative microgreens in projects such as vertical farming. They are currently in the early stages of the project, assessing the market and looking for innovative ways to meet the expectations of stakeholders.

M-SParc was made to help innovation develop, and Bangor University is the perfect starting point to make this happen. Bangor Students will continue to benefit, from first year through to post-doc and beyond, by having a Science Park on their doorstep.
