M-SParc Hits the Hundred

M-SParc, Wales’ first dedicated Science Park, which opened on the 1st of March 2018, has hit a key milestone with 100 people now working in the first building.

The £20m facility, part funded by European Regional Development Funding through the Welsh Government recently announced that it had completed on time and on budget. They announce today that 40% of the building is now let, and that they achieved this well ahead of target.

The building boasts laboratory, office, and clean workshop space, created with input from companies of all sizes who work in the science and technology sectors with a focus on Low Carbon.

Managing Director Pryderi ap Rhisiart, who took over from Ieuan Wyn Jones in May following his retirement, said “We want to attract the brightest minds in the region, and retain the talent here in North West Wales. M-SParc will help them grow and prosper, providing full business support and space for them to grow in. Being able to announce that we have 13 tenants, with enquiries coming through almost daily now, is very exciting news. Almost 40% of the building is now let.”

Based on a typical Science Park business model, the company anticipated 15% occupancy in the first few months, building up to full capacity over a number of years. The current occupancy rate beats the sector standard by some margin.

Prof. John G. Hughes, University Vice Chancellor, said “It is encouraging to see the uptake this early on, and the aim now will be to continue to support companies based at M-SParc, and encourage graduates to see that there are prospects in North Wales, and high-level jobs are being created in the region.”

The Next Generation In addition to being a great place to work M-Sparc want to inspire the next generation of innovators. Ysgol Esceifiog, visited on Friday the 18th of May, and were given a tour of the building and allowed to design their own scientific invention. The Park will continue to encourage children to consider careers in science and technology with a computer coding club on the 23rd of May between 13:00-18:00, to which all are welcome.

“It’s vital that we inspire the next generation to innovate and be enterprising if we’re to achieve our goal to grow the digital and scientific sector in the region” added Pryderi ap Rhisiart.
