M-SParc takes tech on tour by launching new Colwyn Bay location

On a mission to support innovation in science and technology in communities across Conwy, Gwynedd and Anglesey, M-SParc by Bangor University is excited to be on tour as they announce the opening of an M-SParc location in Colwyn Bay.

The ‘On Tour’ location on the High Street will be a temporary home to all the activities which take place in the flagship building on Anglesey, including a Ffiws Maker Space, hot desks, co-working space, business, design, technology and innovation workshops and seminars, as well as science and technology sessions for young people.

The Ffiws Maker Space is the latest in a series of ‘Ffiws’ spaces available across the region, developed for public use to prototype and brand your business in a creative way. The co-working space is perfect for those wanting to work in a community area with company, and the many workshops which will be available are open to anyone and will cover a range of engaging topics.

In 2019 and early 2020 M-SParc went on tour in Bethesda and Botwnnog, engaging almost 700 people in four months in a project to promote, stimulate and support businesses in the Technology and Science sector to grow in the region.
The tour is a direct result of M-SParc wanting to deliver a regional impact in the Creative, Science and Technology sectors, to stimulate businesses and encourage more people to take an interest in science and technology.

By being rooted in the communities of north-west Wales, M-SParc will inspire the next generation to take an interest in these vital sectors and foster collaboration between industry and Bangor University.

Menai Science Park Managing Director, Pryderi ap Rhisiart, said:

“It is an exciting milestone for M-SParc to be heading back out on the road very soon, and we’re very much looking forward to launching the newest On Tour location in Colwyn Bay.

“We’ve long since proven that M-SParc is far more than just a building of bricks and mortar and that we’re here to stimulate and support the science and technology sector across Wales. What’s so exciting about launching our latest On Tour location in Colwyn Bay is that it signifies the start of us being able to take M-SParc back on the road, engaging with communities and supporting them to be creative, to collaborate and to launch or develop their businesses.”

Helen Jackson, Programme Co-ordinator for Imagine Colwyn Bay added:

“I am delighted to be working with M-SParc to bring their On Tour programme to Colwyn Bay. The town has a really active creative community and supporting its position as emerging hub for creative industries has been an important part of the Imagine Heritage Fund Great Place programme.

“This pilot is well-timed to support renewal as the Covid restrictions ease, it will offer a space where people can come together, develop and test new ideas and ways of working.

“I am excited to see how the project develops and explore opportunities for the longer term that fit with the Conwy wide plans to place culture at the heart of community renewal and economic growth.”
All the action in Colwyn Bay kicks off in September, with an exciting programme of events already in place. You can find out more and book your place for these events over on M-SParc’s Eventbrite page!

Ffiws is created in partnership with Menter Môn, Gwynedd Council, Arloesi Gwynedd Wledig, and Cynllyn Arfor, and you can find a Ffiws Maker Space near you at www.ffiws.cymru.
