Graduates launch Start-up

Local graduates launch a new start-up to transform the way Welsh is taught.

Pai Language Learning aim to promote Welsh and minority languages through online courses based on data science.

Two Bangor University business school postgraduates have established a KickStarter campaign to develop their online language learning platform, using data-science to change the way people learn languages, with the aim of helping learners take up Welsh and minority languages.

Pai Language Learning is a data-based language learning platform aiming to disrupt the online language learning industry through the use of data science. By combining this approach with empowering the learner to take control of their own learning experience, teaching themselves to teach themselves, the language learning process can be optimised for the individual.

The founders of Pai Language Learning – one a native Welsh speaker and the other a learner – were inspired by their experiences with the Welsh language to do something to further encourage learners to take up the task of learning it, whilst creating jobs in Wales to aid the local economy.

Josef Roberts, Co-founder of Pai Language Learning, said “Our pride in our country’s language informs almost everything we do as a company. As a learner myself, I have seen the value and importance of learning Welsh and wanted to share the positive experience that I have had with as many people as possible. It’s also inspired us to try our best to help as many smaller languages as possible through making courses available to learn them.”

The company is currently crowdfunding as they look to formally launch in the new year, having spent much of 2020 working on the platform with help from M-SParc, Bangor University, the Enterprise Hub @ M-SParc, the Welsh Government's Youth Entrepreneurship Programme and Santander Universities.

If the KickStarter is successful, the company plan to launch in April with courses in English, Welsh, Mandarin and Hindi, with over 100 other language courses in development. They have also committed to donating 10% of any profits from uptake of their minority language courses towards organisations who promote the use and learning of those languages.

Simon Parry-Williams, Co-founder of Pai Language Learning, added “One of the ways our company supports the Welsh language is by having all of our courses available through the medium of Welsh as we believe that the language you speak shouldn’t affect your access to resources to learn other languages.”
