We spoke to Managing Director, Huw Watkins

Continuing with our work to demystify the activity that goes on at M-SParc, we sat down to speak with Huw from BIC Innovation, about the work they do in supporting businesses, including our tenants.

Who?

BIC Innovation provide business improvement and growth support to businesses, either through funded government programmes or directly with companies. With their registered office here at M-SParc, they also operate out of SONY in Bridgend and have two smaller satellite offices at Aberystwyth and Western Super Mare. Specialising in business innovation to support growth, BIC has expertise in the management of research and development, manufacturing processes, export, finance and key elements of business planning. They also provide cluster facilitation as a new approach to drive sustainable growth. Most of their support is geared for companies in the Food and Drink industry, a dedicated foundation industry in Wales. With a growing and experienced team, they can provide a multi-disciplinary approach to projects, ensuring that the client or end beneficiary receive added value at every opportunity. An ‘investor ready’ programme is currently being delivered to help food companies of all sizes, across Wales. This involves establishing ‘needs’, forming 5-year financial projections and progressing towards securing the right investment. BIC Innovation have also launched a new service, specifically for life science and health care businesses. They have a team of 11 industry-focused experts that can advise on financial management, commercial development, regulatory compliance, legal and HR support. Innovation

The team at M-SParc, along with colleagues at Bridgened are working on the pioneering ‘Future Foods’ project with Aberystwyth University, bringing food companies and the supply chain together to increase R&D between the companies and the University. The purpose of the Future Foods programme, which is funded by European Regional Development Funding and the Welsh Government, is to develop foods with a functional or health benefit. One such area is developing delivery mediums for certain compounds to create defences against osteoporosis and pre-diabetes conditions. BIC is also a delivery partner of the Enterprise Europe Network. The Network is active in more than 60 countries worldwide. It brings together 3,000 experts from more than 600-member organizations – all renowned for their excellence in innovation and internationalization. The Network helps businesses innovate and grow on an international scale. It is the world’s largest support network for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) with international ambitions.

Benefits of M-SParc

BIC Innovation are working with 4 other companies based at M-SParc already – links which would either never have been made, or taken a lot longer to create and foster, had they not been located at M-SParc. The positive and professional environment helps to create a good first impression when welcoming clients, allowing BIC to focus on business matters.

What’s next?

Looking forward, BIC Innovation believes that by working innovatively and often in collaboration with selective partners, there is a better chance of succeeding. To this end, they are working with Bangor University on a project that will transform how the company manages and shares knowledge, continue to identify and recruit new talent and are realising the benefits of having an employee owned structure.
